Why visit the Buffalo Gap Historic Village?

133 N. William Street
Box 818
Buffalo Gap, Texas 79508

gsc@tfhcc.com

Located in the scenic town of Buffalo Gap, the Buffalo Gap Historic Village is an award-winning open-air history museum which brings the West Texas Frontier alive with over a dozen original buildings and scores of historical artifacts. It is the physical setting of the Texas Frontier Heritage and Cultural Center™, which owns and operates it. It is also a unique and popular venue for meetings, lectures, and special educational programs. Even if you aren’t attending one of these special events, you can enjoy your tour of the premises with our custom-prepared sound wands, which guide you through the attractions of the Village at your own pace. When you are there, you can:
  • Check out our Indian arrowhead and frontier weapons collections in the Courthouse museum.
  • Marvel at our premier collection of medical instruments (and be glad you live in an age of anesthetics!)
  • If you like cars, you’ll want to see our Model T hack.
  • Give your kids something to do at our Craft Sundays!
  • Remember your reading, writing, and ’rithmatic in our two-room school house. Teachersand parents: The Village offers you special resources in our interactive school programs.
  • Browse the Texas History Store full of more Texas-related books, gifts, and souvenirs than you’re likely to find anywhere else in the area under one roof.
  • Expand your mind with lectures from our Chautauqua Learning Series.
  • Enjoy the peaceful rural setting of the Village.
  • Worship with us in the Village Chapel on tle last Sunday of the month.
  • Wondering what to do when you complete your visit? There are a host of other attractions in the Abilene-Buffalo Gap area, as well as numerous restaurants and overnight accommodations. Be sure to check them out!
...And these are just the some of the regular features or activities at the Village. There are also special one-time events and exhibits. To check on the latest such happenings, click here.

Getting Here

We’re located 14 miles south of Abilene on State Highway 89 (Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene), in the middle of the quiet town of Buffalo Gap. If you’re driving in from the Dallas – Fort Worth area, just get on Interstate 20 and head west. When you get to Abilene, take Loop 322 south to the Buffalo Gap Road exit. If you’re coming from Midland or Odessa, do the same thing except head east; and when you reach Abilene, follow Loop 83/84 south to the Buffalo Gap Road off ramp. Once you’re on Buffalo Gap Road, just continue south, past the Abilene Mall and the city limits. When you start seeing speed signs telling you to slow down, you’ll know you’re on the edge of the town of Buffalo Gap. Turn right on Elm – then go two blocks. If you miss Elm, don’t panic; just keep driving until you come to William Street (across from Jim Ned Elementary School), make a right turn on it, and head north. We’re at 133 North William Street.
