Educational Programs

While it could be said that the whole Buffalo Gap Historic Village is an education in the history of the West Texas frontier, the Texas Frontier Heritage and Cultural Center™ offers a number of special, ongoing educational programs. Check out these possibilities:

Village Scavenger Hunt: We have two scavenger hunt kits for school classes (or anyone else who wants to use them with their kids). One is for 1st to 5th grade children and doesn't require a sound wand. The second, for grades 6 and up, does require use of a sound wand. They can both be downloaded here:

Writing CampYoung kids scavenger hunt: MSWord format
Young kids scavenger hunt: PDF format

Older kids scavenger hunt (needs sound wand): MS Word format
Older kids scavenger hunt (needs sound wand): PDF format

History Detective: (PDF format) Find out how good of a super sleuth you are! Each rhyme asks a question about different buidling or areas of the Historic Village. Print this out before you go, and you’ll be set to take the quiz!

You can also structure your children's visit to the Village using our online teacher’s curriculum guide.

Writing Camp: The facilities of the Village have offered an excellent venue for special writing camps in the early summer, allowing interested high school students sharpen their writing skills.

Chautauqua Learning Series: This project is supported by a grant from the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, the City of Abilene, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. What is Chautauqua? To find out, and to also find out about upcoming Chautauqua presentations, click here.

School deskOur 1925 Historic School Class Experience has provided hundreds of local students the chance to find out how different school was in 1925 compared to today.

Base ball playerVintage Base Ball team: Among the past activities it has sponsored, one of the most successful has been an old-style vintage base ball (not baseball) team. In response to community demand, the Texas Frontier Heritage & Cultural Center organizd a team which practiced at the Village and won several championships against other Texas vintage base ball teams.

The Village facilities also provide a number of student intern opportunities for local university history students.
