Civil War books

State House Press is proud of its strong line of titles in the history of the Civil War and the Old South, as it continues the tradition of the McWhiney Press. We are especially known for our Civil War Campaigns and Commanders series, which combines the latest scholarship with clear narrative prose.

Wilson's Creek

Jeffrey Patrick’s study of the Wilson’s Creeek campaign, critical for the course of the Civil War in Missouri, is the latest title in our Civil War Campaigns and Commanders series.

Irish Confederates

Philip Tucker, Irish Confederates, The Civil War’s Forgotten Soldiers, concentrates on members of one ethnic group
during the Civil War rather than looking at a single
specific campagin or battle.
Thunder Across the Swamp

Thunder Across the Swamp by Donald S. Frazier follows Fire in the Canefield
as the second in a projected trilogy of books on the course of the Civil War
in Louisiana. Frazier is our current Featured Author.
How Historians Work

Of course, the historian whose work has inspired many of the authors of our books is Grady McWhiney, a prolific writer himself about the Civil War. Now, Judith Lee Hallock, John C. Waugh, and Drake Bush discuss how twenty-four distinguished historians — many students or colleagues of McWhiney — practice the historian’s craft, based on extensive interviews with each of them. This is a fascinating read for anyone interested in how historians of Texas or the Civil War actually produced the books that now sit on the shelves of our libraries.
